En-Gendering the Police: Women\u27s Police Stations and Feminism in São Paulo

This article contributes to feminist state theory and studies of women\u27s police stations in Latin America by examining the processes shaping the multiple and changing positions of explicit alliance, opposition, and ambiguous alliance assumed by policewomen regarding feminists since the creation of the world\u27s first women\u27s police station in 1985 in São Paulo. While studies of women\u27s police stations tend to overlook the political conjuncture, much of the literature on the state and gender explains the relationship between the state and women\u27s movements as a function of the political regime. I argue for a more grounded feminist state theory, taking into account interactive macro and micro, local and international forces. As this case study demonstrates, policewoman-feminist relations evolve due to interactions between the political conjuncture, the hegemonic masculinist police culture, developments in the feminist discourse on violence against women, and the impact of the contact policewomen sustain with women clients

Does Melatonin Improve Salt Stress Tolerance in Onion Genotypes?

    No full text
In this study, the effect of different doses of foliar melatonin application on the leaf and bulb properties of onion under salt stress was investigated forthe first time. Four commercial varieties were used as plant materials. One 1μM, 2 μM, 4 μM, and 8 μM doses of melatonin were applied to the plantsat the seedling stage by leaf spraying two times. Salt stress was created by an irrigation programme containing 0, 100 mM, 200 mM, and 400 mM NaCl.At the end of the study, 13 morphological traits that play an important role in onion cultivation were observed. As a result of the study, it was foundthat the combined effect of three factors for the number of bulb scales and bulb weight traits is statistically significant. Overall, it has been observed thatmelatonin has the potential to counteract the negative effects of salt stress for some traits. However, different results between genotypes revealed thatsimilar field trials should be tested with different genotypes to determine the appropriate melatonin dose in onion plants.</p

WOS: 000326939000002PubMed: 24294072A new scorpion species, Euscorpius lycius sp. n., is described based on specimens collected from Mugla and Antalya Provinces, in southwestern Turkey. It is characterized by a standard trichobothrial pattern (Pv= 8/9, et= 6, em= 4, eb= 4), small size and light brown/reddish coloration. With the description of Euscorpius lycius sp. n., the number of valid species of the genus Euscorpius in Turkey increases to 5

Acute Respiratory Distress due to Antipsychotic Drugs

    No full text
We report a 36-year-old male schizophrenic patient who was treated with risperidone for a long time. Because of an acute psychotic reaction, haloperidol, chlorpromazine and olanzapine were administered additionally. After administration of these drugs, he developed acute respiratory distress that caused his death. We discuss the cause of this respiratory distress and conclude that it might be due to acute laryngeal dystonia caused by these antipsychotic drugs. Antipsychotic drug-induced laryngeal dystonia is rarely reported but it is a life threatening side effect. All physicians dealing with antipsychotic drug therapy must be aware of acute laryngeal dystonia, and an antiparkinsonian agent should be administered immediately

Short Distance Falls and Shaken Baby Syndrome: Case Report

    No full text
Falls from short distances very rarely cause serious lesions in infants. However, if an infant is brought to a doctor with a serious clinical presentation and if there is a history of a fall from a short distance, the history should be detailed. In the presence of retinal haemorrhage or subdural haemorrhage, shaken baby syndrome (SBS) should certainly be taken into consideration. Six cases who were admitted to the Pediatrics Emergency Department of Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine in the previous year with convulsion and a history of fall from a short distance were examined. Fundoscopic examination was normal in three cases while there was unilateral retinal haemorrhage in two cases and papilledema in one case. There was intracranial haemorrhage in three cases, intracranial haemorrhage and skull fracture in one case, cerebellar and cerebral atrophy in one case. CT was normal in one case. The distance offal! was claimed to be 50-100 cm. Medical history, physical examination and radiological findings of children with convulsion and history of fall from a short distance should be evaluated for SBS
